The Cord: A Riveting Exploration of Parenthood and Identity
"When I look at him, I feel like he’s me. But if the baby is me, then who am I? You?"
The advent of a new life has upheaved everything.
Amir stands in awe as his mother cradles her grandchild, the air thick with a sense of transformation. Handmade baby clothes lie at her feet, a tangible expression of love.
As Amir observes his wife nurturing their newborn son, an almost tangible closeness envelops them. Yet, Amir grapples with a growing void that seems to widen the gap between himself, his family, and his mother.
Through sleepless nights, inconsolable cries, and muted conflicts, Amir confronts the enigma of being a father, a son, a husband—piecing together fragments that resist cohesion. Determined not to replicate history, Amir strives for a different path.
'The Cord' offers an unflinchingly honest and relatable portrayal of the complexities of parenthood and filial bonds, transcending age. This poignant new play reunites Olivier award-winning writer and director Bijan Sheibani (Barber Shop Chronicles) with the team behind the 2019 Bush Theatre hit, 'The Arrival.' The stellar cast includes Irfan Shamji (The Arrival, Chasing Hares) in the role of Amir.
