"I had that recurring dream again, drowning and gasping, but I'm determined not to let it consume me."
Malachi eagerly anticipated a fresh start at university for months. He's settling into his new life, immersing himself in a pile of books, and has encountered someone special - Kojo, a musician with an infectious smile who seems almost too good to be true.
Yet, an unsettling feeling lingers. The same nightmare haunts him relentlessly, a sensation of sinking beneath the crushing weight of the ocean. It's growing more intense, and a lurking beast emerges in the water, ravenous and unrelenting, stalking him just beyond his vision. As the lines blur between dream and reality, Malachi finds himself battling to keep his head above water.
"Dreaming and Drowning" is a profoundly personal and visceral exploration of the complex psyche of a young Black queer man wrestling with anxiety. This exhilarating world premiere of the Mustapha Matura Award-winning play is both written and directed by Kwame Owusu and brought to life by WoLab (For a Palestinian).
