Description

Winner of this year's Surrey Heritage Award 2022. View the newly-opened renovated building, permanent exhibition exploring the history of Epsom's 20th century psychiatric hospital cluster.

Horton Chapel, also known as Harewood Hall, was built in 1901 by Victorian architect G T Hine, famed for designing what were then called asylums. The last surviving chapel of Epsom's vast, pioneering Victorian psychiatric hospital cluster has been undergoing renovations to be relaunched as a venue for arts, heritage and events.

After being semi-derelict for several decades, this impressive building was saved by local people with a vision to renovate the chapel and run it as a not-for-profit centre for arts and culture - called The Horton.

View the permanent exhibition on the history of the 1000-acre Epsom Hospital Cluster, and the people who lived and worked there.

Restoration and conversion work began on-site in 2019 and was been funded by an enterprise grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, developers' section 106 funds, Viridor Credits plus other grants and donations.

The converted café - showcasing original features such as the restored decorative organ pipes, Victorian encaustic tiles floor and barrel-vaulted ceilings - will be open.
