Walking tour of Clerkenwell Social Housing and a document viewing afterwards.
Often described as London’s first suburb, Clerkenwell has over the centuries established its own very special identity. This circular walk looks at how it has developed through the history of its social housing: from medieval alms houses to Victorian philanthropic tenements, and a richly diverse collection of 20th century ‘council’ housing. Including an iconic estate and facilities designed for the borough, then sometimes referred to as the ‘People’s Republic of Finsbury’, by the famous Russian émigré architect Berthold Lubetkin. Led by Mike Moran, City Highlights. 1 - 2pm: After the walk you will be able to view some specially selected material from the Archives about Clerkenwell’s social housing.
