History of English Publishing

You are welcome to join us for drinks from 6.30pm. The talk will begin at 7pm.

English has become one of the great languages of the world and publishing contributes significantly to the UK economy.

About the Speaker

Andrew Hayward has worked in the publishing industry for nearly forty years. He began work at Lutterworth Press and then, after university, worked for Penguin Pearson and Constable and Robinson.

He was also heavily involved with the Labour Governments “Year of Reading” and was on the founding committee that introduced World Book Day and then went on to serve on the next ten committees. He read a lot of books In that time and went to a lot of lunches!

He says 'when I retired five years ago, several people suggested I give a talk on this subject. When I was given an invitation to do just that, I did more thorough research. What became very clear was that the development of publishing had gone hand in hand with the growth of the English language and of literacy.

I think it is a fascinating story. I hope that you will too.'

Tickets are £10 each which include a glass of wine. The drinks reception will start at 6.30pm.
