Heraldry has been associated with Parliament and politics since the Middle Ages. This lecture will showcase personal coats of arms featuring symbols of parliamentary tradition, such as portcullises, maces and other regalia, from the 1500s to the present. It will also examine the use of heraldry in political and public life and include some examples of relevant arms from Commonwealth countries with Westminster-style legislatures.
Dr Duncan Sutherland is a historian who studied the House of Lords for his M.A. and Ph.D. theses and specialises in women in Parliament. His previous heraldry projects examined women politicians’ coats of arms and the use of heraldry in Jamaica.’
