The Hammersmith Flyover forms part of the A4 and is a strategic route from central London to the west. In December 2011 Transport for London’s structural investigations revealed that the post tensioned cables in five of the sixteen spans of the Hammersmith Flyover had deteriorated significantly, leading to the closure of the flyover just before Christmas.
Urgent work was undertaken on these five spans allowing the flyover to fully reopen to traffic in time for the Games in 2012. The second phase of works commenced in October 2013 and completed in September 2015 and introduced additional post tensioning to the remaining eleven spans, replaced the bridge bearings, replaced the drainage system and waterproofed and resurfaced the deck of the flyover.
This presentation will highlight the issues with the existing structure, the works to replace the post tensioning and the problems encountered.
