William Morris Textiles: An Online Talk by Jenny Lister

Jenny Lister discusses the impact of William Morris on Victorian Textiles.

William Morris was a one-man pattern-making phenomenon and a master of colour whose distinctive, stylised floral and foliage designs and use of deep blues, reds and yellows, revolutionised the appearance of late-Victorian textile design. His revival of the indigo-discharge method of printing and the application of natural, vegetable dyes, also exemplified Morris’s championship of traditional techniques of production and his pursuit of perfection in every area of his work.

In this online lecture Jenny Lister, V&A curator and specialist on historic textiles, discusses the history, style and production of Morris’s printed textiles, and considers the enduring appeal of his work in 20th century reproductions.
