Talk by Nicolette Jones, author of The Plimsoll Sensation: the Great Campaign to Save Lives at Sea.
After Nicolette Jones moved into Plimsoll Road in Finsbury Park, she became curious about Samuel Plimsoll, after whom the road and the local pub were named.
Researching his life, she discovered a story of a timeless fight to bring in life-saving safety measures on ships. He encountered much resistance from shipowners, including some fellow MPs but, among the public, his campaign inspired novels, plays, music hall songs and poems.
