History of Barking station

3rd Feb 1964An experiment on the eastbound District line platform started with train doors opening on both sides, so passengers swapping to British Rail services didn't have to use the stairs to cross to the opposite platform.
30th Sep 1961The revamped station was formally opened on this day.
Circa Jan 1956The station booking hall was completely rebuilt between 1959 and 1961 to designs by architect H. H. Powell with Project architect John Ward of British Railways Eastern Region Architect's Department.
Circa Jan 1889A substantial rebuilding of the station added four platforms, a new ticket office, and a cattle pen.
13th Apr 1854The original station, with just two platforms, opened on 13 April 1854
