Warlords, Kings and Warriors
Description
Sci-Fi and Fantasy is a genre heavily preoccupied with kings, heroes and great men of power. These archetypes continue to exert huge influence - as current politics suggests. This panel will discuss the allure and danger of the strongman narrative in their fiction and in real life.Anna Smith Spark is the author of the grimdark fantasy Empires of Dust trilogy and the folk horror high fantasy A Sword of Bronze and Ashes, book one in her The Making of This World Ruined series, as well as the standalones A Woman of the Sword and In the Shadow of Their Dying. Her writing has been described as ‘a masterwork’ by Nightmarish Conjurings, and ‘howls like early Moorcock, converses like the best of Le Guin’ by the Daily Mail.
Adrian Tchaikovsky was born in Lincolnshire and studied zoology and psychology at Reading before becoming a professional author in 2007. He is a keen role-player and board gamer and is trained in stage-fighting.
Mike Brooks is the author of The God-King Chronicles, an epic fantasy series. He was born in Ipswich, Suffolk, and moved to Nottingham to go to university when he was eighteen, where he still lives with his wife, cats, and snakes. He worked in the homelessness sector for fifteen years before going full-time as an author, plays guitar and sings in a punk band, and DJs wherever anyone will tolerate him. He is queer, and partially deaf (no, that occurred naturally, and a long time before the punk band).
Richard Swan is a critically acclaimed British genre writer. His debut fantasy novel, The Justice of Kings, was an instant Sunday Times bestseller and has been translated into eight languages. His other work includes the Art of War and Great Silence trilogies, as well as fiction for Black Library and Grimdark Magazine. Richard is a qualified lawyer, and before writing full time spent ten years litigating multimillion pound commercial disputes in London. He currently lives in Winchester with his wife and three young sons.
