The Conversation: Åsne Seierstad
Description
The Conversation is a series of weekly events talking about conflict and empathy, inequality and power, climate crisis and wonder through storytelling and action. The first half of the evening is an interview, which is followed by the host and guest joining the audience around tables to take the conversation further. Everyone is welcome.Norwegian war correspondent Åsne Seierstad has worked across the world, including Russia, China, Iraq and Afghanistan. Her second book, The Bookseller of Kabul sold over two million copies. Her other critically acclaimed works include One of Us: The Story of Anders Breivik and the Massacre in Norway, A Hundred and One Days: A Baghdad Journal, The Angel of Grozny, Two Sisters and now The Afghans, which introduces us to three people whose lives have been shaped by the fall and rise of the Taliban – Jamila, Bashir and Ariana – as well their families, friends, foes and co-fighters. Jamila is a women’s rights activist; Bashir is a Taliban commander; Ariana is a law student who had one semester left when the Taliban came to power. Seierstad maps the lead-up to the Taliban return in 2021, how the first year of Taliban rule unfolded, and where this leaves Afghans today, and tomorrow.
