The Conversation: David Spiegelhalter

Description

The Conversation is a series of weekly events talking about conflict and empathy, inequality and power, climate crisis and wonder through storytelling and action. The first half of the evening is an interview, which is followed by the host and guest joining the audience around tables to take the conversation further. Everyone is welcome.

Cambridge Professor and national statistics treasure David Spiegelhalter knows that life is uncertain. How can they manage risk and ignorance – and what does it really mean, mathematically, to be lucky?

He will take them through the principles of probability, showing how it can help them think more analytically about everything from medical advice to pandemics and climate change forecasts. Along the way, he will explain why roughly 40% of football results come down to luck rather than talent, how the National Risk Register assesses near-term risks to the United Kingdom, and why they can be so confident that two properly shuffled packs of cards have never, ever been in the exact same order.
