Red Vienna: When Taxes Paid for Housing

The authors own work

Description

Fed up with over priced rented accomodation? Fed up with a lack of tenants rights? Think there might be an alternative to the volume house builders and their 20 percent profits?

Come along and hear what the socialist council of Vienna achieved between 1919 - 1934.

Over 64,000 homes were built in over 400 building projects. Some of the leading architects and designers of Vienna were involved including Josef Frank, Adolf Loos, Margarete Schutte-Lihotzky and more.

The housing programme was in part paid by city-wide taxes by which rich landlords paid proportionately most.

The housing was supported with kindergartens, schools, cinemas, theatres, workshops, mother and baby clinics, health centres, free dentists (free!), paddling pools, libraries, trees, sculpture, art works and much more.

Oh, and the rents were about 3 - 7 percent of people's incomes.

Come along and see some lovely photos and hear some thoughts and ideas about this quite brilliant and extraordinary project.
