Description

Launching on International Women's Day as part of the 2022 Sex Work Strike, FemmeDaemonium presents an exhibition of ritual photography and performance works by artist Selina Mayer.

Showcasing Selina Mayer's 'Icons' series, this candlelit sacrarium features portraits of sex workers photographed with antique plate cameras to create one-of-a kind prints. Hand-embroidered with metallic thread, the work echoes traditional painted icons, but employs a skilful art form rarely recognised in the patriarchal art world. Illuminating the hypocritical continuum of 'sex sells' within a post-capitalist infrastructure, whilst autonomous labour in the field remains criminalised and stigmatised, this exhibition seeks to reclaim historical iconography and patriarchal views of 'the divine feminine'

Featuring themes on: Feminine archetypes and mythologies, witchcraft and sex magick, and queer sex work feminism.

Originally produced for the We Walk Among You: Womxn’s Strike exhibition on International Women’s Day 2020, curated by sex worker art collective FemmeDaemonium and subvertising art activists Special Patrol Group.
