Description

A trapezoidal contemporary gateway structure designed by ScottWhitbyStudio that will create over 400 mirrored images of St Pauls Cathedral as pedestrians arrive out of St Paul’s Underground Station. The proposal is made using over hundreds of highly reflective Anodised Aluminium poles suspended vertically from a simple light weight structural canopy.

In the middle of the structure users will find a reflective oculus and dome of poles which have been derived using the same mathematical geometry Christopher Wren used while designing the dome of St Paul’s Cathedral’s.

The structure will engage both passers by and those that can travel underneath it creating a striking sculptural and architectural intervention that both resonates with the sites historic heritage but also offers a glimpse into the future.

The structure has been designed in conjunction with Arup and delivered with the help of The William Hare Group.
