Beyond the wheelchair: Transforming Paralympic sport

Description

Despite growing interest in Paralympic sport and successes in Paris 2024, there's still much to learn about supporting elite wheelchair athletes compared to their Olympic counterparts. Join Para Sport scientist Vicky Goosey-Tolfrey as she explores the shortcomings of current training methods for wheelchair athletes, as they are largely based on non-disabled guidelines, and ways new technologies will help them to better understand how wheelchair athletes move, to train them more effectively and pioneer a new age of wheelchair users in sport.

Vicky will cover how it's essential to consider the unique physical challenges of individual athletes and how they interact with their wheelchair. Tailoring training to their body type, sport classification and role within the team, allowing for wheelchair optimisation and managing external factors such as exercising in the heat. Ultimately, allowing wheelchair athletes to excel using a holistic approach that considers both the athlete, their equipment and the environment.
