Have you ever wondered what's going on beneath our feet?

Join artist and educator Poppy Flint at 'The Fungi Room' in Tottenham to see her installation that quite literally shines a light on humble root systems – the true, slowly beating heart of trees – and puts them centre stage.

From there, she'll take us on a 1.5 hour guided walk around the trees of Springfield Park.

Together we’ll consider the soil and marvel at the microscopic and hidden ecology around the trees and beneath our feet.

Soil is one of the least understood parts of nature and only now getting the recognition it deserves as vital for biodiversity and climate resilience. Soil is the source of 95% of human’s food; it also provides a social, cultural and creative sense of belonging and connection to place.

Afterall, what does it mean to feel rooted?

As the journey progresses we’ll discover the characters that exist below ground and learn a bit about their relationships. We’ll also take time to observe the patterns and interactions of aboveground animals, fungi and plants which we often wizz past without noting.

The content will be suitable for children and there will be regular stops on the walk.

The format is informal and everyone will be welcome to share what they know or imagine of the world underfoot.

At the end, everyone who wishes will be invited to share reflections and record or write their own soil stories, adding to the Soil Voices map and contributing to awareness of soil across the globe.

This event is led by artist and sustainability educator Poppy Flint and part of an ongoing project Underfoot.
