View some pieces from the Museum’s art collection and discover how soldiers have been depicted in cartoons and drawings through time.

The British Army has been depicted in cartoons and other means of artistic satire since its formation. Cartoons reveal how soldiers have poked fun at military life through the ages. They have also been used as tools of propaganda and persuasion, giving us a glimpse at how the Army has been viewed by its contemporaries.

In this special event, the Museum’s art curators will take you on a journey through our collection of cartoons and satirical artworks, reflecting on what they can tell us about military life.

Dr Amy Lidster, curator of our Shakespeare and War exhibition, will discuss how the work of Shakespeare has inspired the way that people depict soldiers.

Following the talks, you will have the opportunity to view a selection of cartoons from our collection, including works by Bruce Bairnsfather and some exciting new acquisitions. There will also be the chance to view the artwork on display in Shakespeare and War with Dr Lidster.
