Type Tuesday: All the fonts of the fair

Eye magazine hosts another of its popular Type Tuesday evening events with a focus on signwriting with Joby Carter. Growing up on Carters Steam Fair, the beautiful vintage travelling funfair, Joby was fascinated by the paintwork on the rides. He pestered signpainter Stan Wilkinson to teach him in the proper tradition of signwriting who had, himself been taught by a master signwriter who in turn had learnt in the same way going back to the 19th century.

Joby now runs signwriting and fairground art courses at the Carters Steam Fair Yard in Maidenhead.
