The burning of Turner’s ‘unsuitable’ drawings by the art critic and artist John Ruskin, has become a widely accepted tale, not least because Ruskin himself perpetuated it.

To modern art lovers it appears to have been an act of prudish vandalism or misplaced hero worship.

Museum Director, Matthew Morgan, examines the evidence, and places the destruction of Turner’s erotic works, whether real or imagined, in the context of the destruction of many collections of letters and archives in the Victorian period.
