London badly needs to build many thousands of new homes, yet doing that within already dense urban areas is fraught with problems. Meanwhile, the city’s green belt - much of which is far from green - has enough space to accommodate at least 1.5 million dwellings.
Surely it is time loosen the decades old restrictions on developing on London’s fringes. Or does the green belt still provide vital protection against urban sprawl and a precious resource for Londoners? In this live debate, we will hear from all sides of an argument fundamental to the capital city’s future that remains as fierce as ever.
Participants:
John Grindrod, author of Outskirts: Living Life on the Edge of the Green Belt
Leona Hannify, Director (Planning), Iceni Projects
Alice Roberts, Chair of CPRE London
