Professor Nicholas Vincent explores significant archival discoveries surrounding the Magna Carta.

Thanks to Magna Carta's 800th Anniversary celebrations in 2015, and the surrounding blaze of activity, it might be thought that no new evidence is likely to emerge either for Magna Carta or its documentary context. In reality, as Professor Vincent will demonstrate, significant archival discoveries continue to be made. Half a dozen in particular will be highlighted here: one (entirely extraordinary) from Brussels, one each from Paris, Lambeth and the British Library, and two more from TNA's own collections. Collectively, they reveal not only the dynamics of rebellion, but the relations between individual rebels and, perhaps above all, the truly revolutionary nature of the settlement sought by the barons and their clerical allies.

The lecture takes place in person at The National Archives in Kew, and will be followed by a drop in document display.
