Hear from esteemed Oxford University professors as they explore the fascinating role of symmetry in maths, music, philosophy and beyond.

Is our world ruled by order or by disorder? It's not just a big question. It's an old question that has engaged philosophers and scientists for thousands of years. We can trace it back through the British Museum's collection to ancient Greek philosophers; Egypt's pharaoh dynasties, ancient Chinese Taoists and to Buddhism's origins in India. It's also a question that is very relevant to life in the West today.

Hosted by Denis Noble and Benedict Rattigan, The language of symmetry brings together a team of Oxford University professors to explain in everyday terms the role of symmetry in their fields of mathematics, music, logic, philosophy, physics, chemistry, astronomy and biology. This extraordinary event reminds us that for all our scientific and technological advances, there are some important revelations to be found hidden deep within humanity's past.

What do the cycle of the seasons, traffic flows in Manhattan, crowd psychology and the throw of a set of dice have in common? In recent years the study of such patterns has intrigued both mathematicians and philosophers. But there is considerable evidence to suggest that these seemingly disconnected phenomena are all governed by a single underlying law - a 'hidden hand' which lies at the heart of everything.

– Benedict Rattigan, writer and Director of the Schweitzer Institute and The language of symmetry co-host.
