If the capacity of the planet’s rainforests to mitigate  against  global  heating is weakened, how will humanity and nature be affected by the implications of climate change?

Through carbon storage, transportation of water and the huge biodiversity held within, the Amazon rainforest in particular plays a crucial role in absorbing the greenhouse gas emissions that we desperately need to reduce. But how is that role affected by continuing degradation of the rainforest, and how long can the Amazon continue to act as one of Earth’s great protectors?

In this discussion we will explore how deforestation, wildfires and the subsequent loss of biodiversity are shrinking the size of Brazilian rainforests and inhibiting their ability to act as the carbon sink—the lungs of the planet—that they have been for so long. We’ll discuss how close we might be from catastrophic and irreversible tipping points, and the effects that global warming of 1.5 degrees above industrial level, and beyond, may have on the region, and we will explore some of the solutions to preserving the forests, through reforestation, rewilding and indigenous stewardship.

Speakers include:

Professor Carlos Nobre—Earth System scientist from Brazil, a pioneering proponent of the theory of ‘savvanization’ of the Amazon and one of the authors of the IPCC Fourth Assessment Report awarded with the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007.

Professor Sir Ghillean Prance FRS, VMH—Botanist, ecologist, former Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew, and Visiting Professor, University of Reading.

Dr Lesley Dickie—CEO, Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust

Samira Ahmed (Chair)—Award-winning journalist and broadcaster.

Further speakers to be confirmed closer to the time.
