Walking tour of Kensal Green Cemetery

This event has finished Took place on: Sunday, 17th Oct 2021

 £12

Walking tour of London's first great garden cemetery which has more notable monuments and residents than any other in Britain.

Opened in 1833, Kensal Green became England's most prestigious cemetery after being selected for a royal burial in 1843. The Neo-Classical Anglican Chapel is Grade I-listed and over 150 of the monuments also have listed status, ranging from pure Classical to Gothic extravaganzas all set within this 72-acre green space.

The cemetery is the resting place of 1000 people who feature in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography. They include two more royals; Sir Marc Isambard Brunel and Isambard Kingdom Brunel; the mathematician Charles Babbage; novelists Wilkie Collins, Trollope and Thackeray; Lord Byron's wife; Oscar Wilde's mother; a cross-dressing Army doctor: the surgeon who attended Nelson at Trafalgar; and the first WH Smith.
