Explore the world of silver with Contemporary British Silversmiths in the setting of the Wellington Collection at Apsley House, the London home of the first Duke of Wellington.
Designed by Robert Adam, Apsley House is home to an exceptional collection of paintings, silver and porcelain, with many items given to Wellington after the Battle of Waterloo by grateful monarchs of Europe. Silversmith Ray Walton is demonstrating during the day in the main hall, where visitors can watch him showcase the techniques of making silver by hand and to talk to him about his work.
Running throughout the day is a programme of short talks about the commissioning, collecting and techniques of silver, exploring connections between the historic silver collection and contemporary silver. These take place in the Museum Room, whose original rosewood cases contain many items of stunning silver and silver gilt such as the Waterloo Shield commissioned in 1814.
The event is supported by the London Assay Office, with an opportunity for visitors to find out about the history of hallmarking. This event is also part of the 25 Year Anniversary events for Contemporary British Silversmiths.
