Over forty vintage and futuristic vehicles will mark London’s world of wheels, as the Sheriffs and ritually robed Carmen brand each ‘cart’ with a red-hot iron – the origin of vehicle licensing.

Everyone can witness this historic ceremony for free, which dates back some 500 years and celebrates transport through the ages. With a nostalgic look into the past and a unique glance at the future, it showcases an eclectic collection of transport.

During the annual cart marking ceremony, vehicles of all types from fire engine to hand cart, trade bike to tin lizzie – and state of the art tomorrow trucks – line up to be branded with a hot iron, showing that they are licensed to operate within the City of London. The vehicles enter Guildhall Yard through the arch to be branded as part of this unique ceremony. As each one is presented for marking, a commentator tells visitors about its history and relevance.
