An online technical lecture on the principle and design of double composite bridges for use on HS2.

This presentation will introduce a prominent structure that will carry High Speed 2 (HS2) trains through Buckinghamshire - the seven span, 350m long Small Dean Viaduct in the Chilterns.

The structure is among 96 bridges and viaducts in the £2bn HS2 central section package which runs across Buckinghamshire and Warwickshire.

The presentation will focus on the following analysis and design aspects:

1. Overview of HS2 and central section
2. General structural arrangement of small dean viaduct
3. Addition of seventh span
4. Analysis methodology – what is double composite action?
5. Pier shells
6. Launching analysis
Speakers:

Paul van Hagen (Senior Technical Director, Arcadis) is a chartered engineer with over 29 years of experience in major, mand railway bridge design, evaluation, inspection, and construction.

Paul has worked chiefly in the New York area for several bridge design firms, most recently HDR Engineering of Omaha. In the USA, Paul involved in several high-profile bridge design projects, notably the Bayonne Bridge roadway raising project (which he presented to our region last year).

Paul returned to the UK in 2016 as Chief Engineer with Atkins in Epsom. Paul has recently taken the position of Senior Technical Direct with Arcadis in Croydon. At Arcadis he has worked on HS2 and the Lower Thames Crossing.

Pere Alfaras (Principal Engineer, Arcadis) is a chartered engineer with over 13 years of experience in road and rail bridges, underground and elevated train stations, footbridges, and other major civil structures.

Pere has been involved in major schemes in UK, Spain and other international locations including Brazil, Saudi Arabia and Poland. Pere has been involved in high-profile projects such as Abi Bakr Road, Sao Paulo Metro Line 17, Jeddah Metro, Lower Thames Crossing and HS2.

Pere has been a visiting lecturer for 5 years at the UPC-BarcelonaTech providing lectures on finite element analysis at undergraduate levels in their MSc Civil Engineering program.
