Dr Judith Hill tells us about the work of a Head Gardener in a country house and wonders why they were invisible to history.

The job of Head Gardener in a country house was extremely important. He required staff management skills and horticultural expertise. He would liaise with the Housekeeper over the delivery of fruits, vegetables and flowers from the garden to the house.
