Adrian Ensor, one of Britain’s finest black and white photographic printers, has been working in his darkroom just off Fitzroy Square for 50 years. Over these five decades, Adrian developed a deep and visceral understanding of what makes black and white photography work, twice winning the prestigious Ilford Printer of the Year Award. This experience has given him an unrivalled foundation for his own work as a photographer.

The catalyst to begin taking his own photos came over 30 years ago, with the loss of his beloved dog Billy, which prompted Adrian to go walking with his camera instead. His poignant, dreamlike Yorkshire landscapes were the start of a photographic journey that has taken Adrian around England, across Ireland, to Belgium, Spain, and back to the monumental architecture of London. His work has been featured in The British Journal of Photography, and his photographs of London have been exhibited at The Photographers Gallery, in the Royal Academy Summer Show, and form part of the Eric Frank collection recently gifted to Tate Britain.

Adrian has also been recognised by the Association of Photographers, who presented him with a Silver Award for his Architectural Photography. In his new exhibition, ‘Fifty Years On’, Adrian will be exhibiting selected photos from across the decades along with new, unseen work of the beautifully sculptural rocks at Varengeville sur Mer in France.

This new series brings together several different strands of Adrian’s photography: his landscapes, and his architectural and Monumental London works. In 2002, Adrian published his well-regarded book ‘Advanced Processing and Printing’. He will be introducing a new series of books at ‘Fifty Years On’. These cover architectural photography, Fitzrovian portraits, and his journeys across Yorkshire, Ireland and Spain. Copies purchased at the exhibition will be accompanied by hand-printed, limited edition prints.

‘Fifty Years On’ runs for one day only on Wednesday 30th June 2021, at the Fitzrovia Chapel. Entrance is free.
