Virtual Tour – London's Lamented Art Deco Buildings

Remembering some marvellous Art Deco buildings and looking at the structures that have replaced them

This virtual presentation is a selection of some impressive and unique inter-war buildings that, despite the sterling efforts of architectural preservation societies, are no longer standing. It's a provocative subject.

I will take you on a journey through time, from the demolition of the 1928 Firestone factory in 1980 up to present day, including some buildings that have been lost to us very recently. Find out the back-stories; who built them, who demolished them, and what replaces them. Hear about conservation, innovation and façadism.

See how today's developments are often Deco-inspired – some incorporate elements of the original buildings, others are almost copies. We'll consider whether these eco-friendly and award-winning new builds will also stand the test of time.

After the tour the meeting room will stay open for for questions and discussion.
