“….I never knew how it happened; I had no plan, no preparation, no intention, no provocation; but invisible ropes pulled me out of my seat and, speeding up the aisle, I planted myself timorously down, an unbidden guest, in the seat of honour. I had a moment or two to recover my equanimity, for Dickens was looking steadily out of the window, but he turned in a moment, and said, with justifiable surprise:-

‘God bless my soul, where did you come from?...”

Virtual Event

On Sunday 28th March, more than 150 years after the actual encounter, we bring you a special live adaptation of one of the most intriguing Dickens encounters on record. The account of Charles Dickens’s meeting with an 11 year old girl as they rode a train from Portland, Maine, to Boston in March of 1868.

Dickens had performed in Portland the night before and was returning to The Parker House when Kate, a huge fan of his, realised that he was alone on the train so with the precociousness of youth she sat next to him and began to chat! In 1912, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Dickens’s birth, Kate Douglas Wiggin, now an elderly lady addressed the members of the New York City Dickens Fellowship branch recounting her childhood memories.

Join us on Zoom as we bring the account to life with the help of Jennifer Emerson playing the role of Kate, and Dickens’s great-great-grandson Gerald Dickens playing Dickens himself.
