This webinar, part of The Changing Face of London, will present lessons learned from the last 15 years of culture-led development in the capital.

After rules demanding clubs play in all-seater stadiums were introduced in the 90s, a stadium building boom began. From Arsenal’s pioneering relocation into the Emirates Stadium to the Tottenham Hotspur’s £1bn investment in one of the UK’s poorest wards, the revolution in new sport venues has been remarkable.

However, things were starting to change even before COVID-19 put a stop to large gatherings. The increasing cost of building a new stadium and minimal financial gains from doing so saw Chelsea, Queens Park Rangers and others abandon the idea. And the implications of the currently empty sport and entertainment venues are still unknown.

Can sport new grounds act as a catalyst for regeneration of local areas? How can these mammoth infrastructures maximise revenue at all times, not just match-days, and remain open as multi-use venues designed to deliver the most for the local community? Could the development of new technologies help find a safe way to bring spectators back?
