Between Triumph and Disaster: French Royal Funerals from Louis XIV to Louis XVIII

French royal funerals were grandiose national ceremonies, as the prints and drawings in Philip Mansel’s talk confirm. But they were also opportunities for people to show their opinion of the deceased.

Many spectators danced and sang along the route of Louis XIV’s funeral procession from Versailles to Saint-Denis in 1715. Louis XV’s funeral procession was treated with contempt.

The first half of the nineteenth century, however, was the golden age of French royal funerals. After their ceremonial reburial in 1815, there were annual memorial services for Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. Thousands attended the lying in state of Louis XVIII in 1824, and lined the route of his funeral procession. The funerals of Napoleon I in 1840 and the Duc d’Orleans in 1842 were affirmations of national identity, which England tried to rival with the funeral of the Duke of Wellington in 1851.

Dr. Philip Mansel is the author of fourteen books on France and the Middle East, including histories of Constantinople and nineteenth-century Paris. He is President of the Scientific Committee of the Research Centre of the Chateau de Versailles and a Fellow of the Institute of Historical Research, London. In 2012 he won the London Library Life in Literature Award and in 2019 the Franco-British Book Prize for King of the World, his life of Louis XIV. In 1995 he was a co-founder of the Society for Court Studies (www.courtstudies.org).
