The link between art and literature is crucial to an understanding of much of the art of the past.

The link between art and literature is crucial to an understanding of much of the art of the past. For centuries the Bible, Greek and Latin writers provided the main inspiration, and the closer art was to literature the greater the art. The ability to paint well was considered inferior to intellectual effort. There were also practical reasons for creating ‘visible poetry’ as this could raise the status of the artist above that of mere craftsman. By the 18th century many artists were inspired by more recent works of great literature. In England this included Shakespeare (an international favourite), Milton and the Romantic poets. In this lecture we will be looking at artistic responses to a wide variety of literary sources. Join Art Society lecturer Val Woodgate to learn more.
