Railway electrification projects in the UK have gone through a repeating cycle of boom and bust over the last few decades. With a 2050 climate challenge requiring carbon emissions to be reduced to net zero, we are running out of time as a nation to commit to the “rolling programme of electrification” that is urgently needed to secure this ambition.

In this talk, learn about some of the challenges faced by overhead line engineers and how a rebranding exercise could help to repair the reputational damage incurred from some more recent projects. Finally, discover how HS2 may positively or negatively impact the chances of achieving a carbon free energy transmission system as it enters its early stages of construction from London to Birmingham.

Chris Bryan is a Chartered Mechanical Engineer working as the Senior Overhead Line Engineer for HS2 Phase 2. In this role, he advises the project on the electrification challenges faced by a new railway that feeds into the existing network at Crewe, Manchester, Sheffield and Leeds. He is able to draw on previous experience working for the Swiss overhead line firm, Furrer+Frey, developing and testing brand new electrification systems installed on the Great Eastern and Great Western railways. He currently serves as a UK expert for the development of international electrification standards with BSi and IEC.
