The very poor of Victorian society, the destitute and those who were unable to help themselves all too often found themselves in the workhouse. But was it as bad as has often been made out? Come along and find out – you may be surprised by what you discover.

In this one-hour talk, Simon Fowler discusses the experiences of pauper inmates. He covers the period between the early 18th century, when the first workhouses were established, and 1930, when they were formally abolished. Simon also looks at surviving archival resources.

You can join Simon for a Questions session at the end of the talk.

Cost: £10
