Landladies have historically had a bad press, victims of gender and class prejudice. The eighteenth century was no exception. This article draws first on representations of the Georgian landlady in novels, plays and images and then in the life-writing of those who were their lodgers. It compares the representation in the two genres and considers how the ‘factual’ representations can be used to recapture the experience of the landladies themselves, who are largely silent in the sources. In so doing it adds to understandings of class, gender and domesticity in the period and continues the strand of scholarship that seeks to repopulate the Georgian workforce with working women beyond the labouring classes.

This seminar paper will be delivered ‘live’ Zoom on Wednesday 17 June 2020.

The Zoom session will begin around 17:00 (GMT) before formal business starts at 17:15. A link to the session will be sent out to those on the seminar e-mail list. If you would like to be added please contact the seminar administrator: gswilliamson@virginmedia.com
