Jasper Winn will talk about his year of slow travel on towpaths and waterways across Britain.
As writer in residence – or more writer in motion – to the Canal and River Trust Jasper walked, kayaked, cycled and boated more than a thousand miles of Britain’s 250 year old canal and waterways network. The result is a book – Water Ways – and a talk that is part slow adventure, part quirky travel book, part history and part deep immersion in nature.
There were long walks along rural, urban, historic, abandoned and restored waterways, and meetings with historians, birdwatchers, fishermen (they were always men), eco-activists and eccentrics. The journey was as much through time as across landscape, and an exploration of the history of the ‘water machine’ that created the Industrial Revolution.
There were pubs, too, with storytellers and waterways musicians to join with on canal songs. And a comic mid-winter trip on a hire boat with a band of friends, a double-bass and a large dog, Wooster.
Jasper travelled to find the unusual and surprising in the history, the culture and the geography of the canals. And succeeded.
Jasper Winn is an independent writer, photographer, researcher and slow adventurer. He wrote Paddle; a long way around Ireland about seakayaking the thousand miles around Ireland's coastline, and has written about traditional horse skills around the world, nomadic peoples, folk music, long walks and weird festivals for magazines, radio and television.
He spent a year living with a nomadic Berber clan in North Africa, and winter walked 500 miles from Munich to Paris in the footsteps of film director Werner Herzog.
He has just completed a 700 mile walking pilgrimage around Japan's '88 Temple' Buddhist pilgrimage route.
For three years Jasper was writer in residence - or as he thought of it, writer in motion - for the Canal and River Trust, walking, cycling, kayaking and working on traditional canal craft to research Water Ways; a thousand miles along Britain's Canals.
