Explore: Richmond Lock

 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Join Environment Trust and Lock Keeper, Jim Deeney, on an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of Richmond Lock and Footbridge following its major repainting programme.

Richmond Lock is hugely important to life on the Thames. After Old London Bridge was demolished in 1831 the river became almost unnavigable between Richmond and Teddington at low tide. This caused problems for the thousands of barges that took cargo up and down the Thames. To resolve the problem an Act of Parliament passed to ordering the construction of the lock, which opened in 1894.

Although the Lock is now over 125 years old, it continues to operate and play a major role in the health of the Thames. The Port of London Authority now care for this magnificent piece of Victorian engineering, and has just completed a major repainting programme - using 3,500 litres of paint!

Join us as we are taken on a tour by the Lock Keeper, see the 20 meter wide sluice gates in actions, and learn about the important role this iconic local structure plays on the health of the River Thames.

The tour will last approximately one hour, and will be led by the Lock Keeper. Please note that there is no step free access to the footbridge and the tour will take place by fast flowing water. Please dress appropriately for the weather.

Cost: £12
