A playground may not seem the most exciting topic for historical investigation. But, be warned: the scope of this story is far from narrow.
What enabled this site of seven acres in central London to become, against all the odds, the facility that children enjoy today?
In attempting to answer this question, we'll take a look at three areas of interest: firstly, philanthropic effort in Bloomsbury before and after World War One; secondly, the campaign to save the Fields (1926-36): and, thirdly, the contribution of the Fields to the welfare of children from the early thirties to the half century following World War Two.
