After the Great Fire of 1666, Christopher Wren presented a radical new plan for London, with wide straight streets, axial symmetry, monumental endpoints and a waterfront of open quays. It was never implemented, but Wren's son ensured that it was published, and it is regularly discussed and frequently invoked to this day.
This talk by Dr Michael Hebbert, Emeritus Professor of Town Planning, Bartlett School, UCL, reconsiders the plan and its chequered history in light of new research for a fresh perspective on Wren and the post-Fire City.
Proceeds from this talk will contribute to the Friends of the City Churches' Melba Coombs Memorial Fund. Melba established the Friends' volunteer Church Watching scheme, which helps to keep about half of the City's historic churches open to visitors for at least one day a week.
Ticket includes tea and homemade cake with the Friends of the City Churches.
