Join us for the fifth London 'Mari Lwyd' (Grey Mare) new year's celebration!
Originally Mari (a decorated horse's skull) and her party would tour an area gaining access to houses by winning witty improvised sing-offs with local families who would then offer the party food, drink and best wishes for the new year.
Our event will follow the 21st century tradition of visiting pubs instead of houses and song-sheets will be provided.
We will perform the Mari Lwyd songs at some pubs (no rehearsal necessary!) and will end the evening with more singing and some Welsh twmpath (ceilidh) dancing.
Rough timings:
6.30pm: Opportunity to go through the song lyrics before Mari arrives - The Boot
7pm The BOOT PUB WC1H 8BS
7.45pm The Harrison, WC1H 8JF
8.30pm Calthorpe Arms, WC1X 8JR
9pm London Welsh Centre, WC1X 8UE
Parts of the evening will take place in Welsh but the event is suitable for everyone regardless or your fluency in Welsh or confidence at singing! The event is free of charge.
