How did the government try to protect you?

In this illustrated lecture based on his new book, historian David Welch, delves into The Central Office of Information Archive at the British Library – a collection of over 15,000 free information and guidance leaflets, posters, and other promotional material from the 1940s to 1997 – to reveal what the government wanted its citizens to think or know, and how it wished Britain to be viewed by the outside world.

David Welch, one of the world’s leading writers on propaganda and information projection, is Emeritus Professor of Modern History and former director of the Centre for the Study of War, Propaganda and Society at the University of Kent. He has published many books on propaganda including Persuading the People: British Propaganda in World War II, Germany and Propaganda in World War I, The Third Reich: Politics and Propaganda and Propaganda: Power and Persuasion.
