It’s exciting to be an archaeologist now.

Stories of new discoveries are so common that it seems normal to hear them, day after day. But it’s not. There has never been a time before when so much ancient material was found, nor so much learnt about our distant history. It’s difficult for specialists to keep up with their own fields. It’s all but impossible for anyone seeking a wider view.

The scale of excavation in Britain now is unprecedented. Why? Who pays for it? Where does everything dug up go? But it’s not just about finds (detectorists are doing their bit too). There has been a scientific revolution: thanks to new developments in radiocarbon dating, DNA studies, chemical analyses and much more, we are now learning things about past lives that were literally unimaginable 20 years ago.

Most importantly, all this new information is doing more than filling in gaps and answering old questions. It is changing what we know about Britain’s early history and the way we think about ourselves.

In this talk, Mike Pitts will show you how archaeology has changed and the impact it's having.

Mike Pitts is a professional archaeologist and museum curator, directing excavations at Stonehenge and elsewhere. he is a recipient of the British Archaeology Press Award, a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London, a member of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists and a director of Antiquity Publications Ltd.

This lecture includes a complimentary drink and is followed by a book signing.
