Fear of the Resurrection Men in Georgian and Victorian England

Fear of the Resurrection Men in Georgian and Victorian England

  7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

For London's poor, the experience of the death of a loved one could be tragic and the funeral that followed could be a bleak affair, with the remains often laid in an over crowded grave. But at at least the body - and the soul - was now at rest. Wasn't it?

In eighteenth and early nineteenth century London, the sanctity of the grave was often violated by Resurrection Men, searching for the freshest bodies for the dissection rooms. And the destruction of the physical body could mean the destruction of the eternal soul.

A talk about the fear of the Resurrection Men and the strategies employed by the living to save the those laid to eternal rest from a fate worse from death led by the Old Operating Theatre Museum & Herb Garret's own Kirsty Chilton, museum researcher.

Doors will open at 6:30 PM for a 7:00 PM start.

Cost: £12
