What do live chickens, urine baths and ground emeralds have in common? They were all ‘cures’ for the plague. Join pathologist Dr Suzy Lishman as she explores the effects of the bubonic plague on the human body with the help of a live model. Hear how medieval doctors tried to avoid catching the disease from their patients and about the unusual treatments they prescribed.
Dr Suzy Lishman CBE is an award-winning pathologist, author and broadcaster, who regularly speaks to schools and the public about health and disease. She recently featured in Channel 5’s “Digging Up Britain’s Past”, talking about the plague in the Old Operating Theatre. Previous talks have included the death of Richard III, the health of Henry VIII and a history of pathology told through exhibits in the museum.
