Ted Sandling is the author of London in Fragments, the top-three Evening Standard bestselling book about mudlarking: finding artefacts of historic London on the foreshore of the river Thames. The book garnered such reviews as: ‘The words Sandling unearths are as delightful as the objects he describes’ Daily Mail ; ’Exhilaratingly curious and entertainingly knowledgeable’ Evening Standard; 'hypnotic — yet infectiously jolly’ Spectator; ‘I found a distinct frisson running through me as I read this book’ Country Life; ‘Sandling's aim is to increase inquisitiveness, and he undoubtedly achieves this.’ Times Literary Supplement
In his talk for the Thames Festival, he tells the stories of some of his most fascinating finds, evoking a forgotten London that can be rediscovered through those fragments of history lost and found along the Thames. Through small items such as clay tobacco pipes, neolithic flint and childhood toys, and large objects like masonry from the old Palace of Westminster, Sandling reveals a social and cultural history of this great city in a light-hearted illustrated lecture. His talk also includes a history of mudlarking and tips on enjoying the pastime for beginners.
