Jane Glover: Handel in London

  7:15 pm - 8:30 pm

The story of a young German composer who followed his princely master to London in 1712

Jane Glover, who has conducted Handel’s work in opera houses and concert halls throughout the world, draws on her understanding of music and musicians to tell Handel’s story: a story a young German composer who followed his princely master to London in 1712 and would remain there at the heart of London's musical activity for the rest of his life. Handel, then still only 27 and largely self-taught, would be at the centre of London's musical life for the next four decades, composing masterpiece after masterpiece, be it the coronation anthem, Zadok the Priest, operas such as Giulio Cesare, Rinaldo and Alcina or the great oratorios, culminating, of course, in Messiah. In conversation, Jane tells a story of music-making and musicianship, of practices and practicalities, but also of courts and cabals, of theatrical rivalries and of 18th-century society. Dr Jane Glover is one of the world’s most eminent conductors, and remains one of the few females in her profession. She was Music Director of the Glyndebourne Touring Opera from 1981-85, Artistic Director of the London Mozart Players from 1984-91, and has held Principal Conductorships of the Huddersfield and London Choral Societies. Jane Glover has conducted all the major symphony and chamber orchestras in Britain and is constantly in demand throughout the world. In opera, Jane Glover has conducted productions at Glyndebourne, the English National Opera, New York City Opera, Royal Danish Opera, Opera Australia, Teatro La Fenice, Venice and Chicago Opera Theater, to name only a few. Her extensive broadcasting career includes the TV series Orchestra and Mozart, and the radio series Opera House and Musical Dynasties, all for the BBC.
